Instructional Focus
At Afton our instructional focus helps guide our programs and our approach to learning. Our instructional focus is "a school wide effort to improve literacy for instructional focus with the arts integrated as a vehicle to facilitate learning." It is this focus that makes us unique and allows us to use the arts as an important teaching and learning tool.
Curriculum
While our curriculum fits the Alberta Program of Studies for Kindergarten to Grade six, we use dance, art, music and drama to enhance the process whenever possible, including beginning every afternoon with a five-minute music appreciation session. Each of the four arts disciplines is also offered as a distinct subject, allowing students to explore them in their truest form.
Student Achievement Programs
Afton is involved in many initiatives and programs designed to improve student achievement, including Balanced Literacy. We guide and encourage students of all interests and abilities, and offer a Learning Strategies Program for students who require extra assistance to reach their academic goals.
